Playlist order (alternate within priorities only)
Alternating podcasts is great, except that I want to hear my top-priority stuff first (alternating if there would be multiples in a row), and only then start going through the lower-priority stuff. I have a number of subscriptions that are basically just filler for slow weeks on the shows I am actually interested in, so I don't need them in between higher priority stuff.
That said, it is great not to get all 200 episodes of the "filler" shows all in a row when I do make it into the lower priority stuff. Alternating is good, just needs to be more choosy.
Please enable Settings/Display/Alternate podcasts & priority sorting to do this

OK, THAT was the setting I was missing. It's in App Settings > Playlist, by the way (not Display), but I'd never noticed it was there at all. I was just using the sort settings in the Playlist section.
Thanks, that cleared it right up.

I've done that. Alternating overrides the priority sorting. If I have 3 episodes of a priority 10 podcast, it will alternate with lower priority podcasts (ie, one from #10, one from #4 (or whatever), one from #3, and only then back to the priority #1 episodes. I have, as I said, a ton of filler at low priorities, so this is an issue.
I expected what you suggest to work, but it doesn't. I should mention that date order also matters here, because I play oldest to newest (so as not to lose the thread of multiple-episode arguments) and there are a lot of old episodes of the "fillers".
