allow multiple playlists
I listen to different types of podcasts depending on what I am doing. I'd like to be able to separate them so I don't have to keep messing with the order of the list.
Podcast Addict v3.42 has just been released.
This new version finally adds support to multiple playlists.
In order to use this new feature, you can go into the Playlists screen and select the new ‘Custom’ tab.
Then you can select the category of your choice and listen to it.
Those default categories are provided by the podcast owner in their RSS feeds, but you can press on the toolbar ‘Category’ button and add/delete/customize them.
That way you can create playlists like News, Commute, Workout, Audiobooks, SFW, …
Each playlist can have its own sorting mode.
Please let me know what you think about this new feature
Thanks
=========
New version will add multiple playlist support.
In order to do so you will need to enable Continuous playback mode in the app Settings/Playlist screen
Then the playlist screen will have a 3rd tab which displays the podcasts categories.
You can then select the category of your choice to start listening to it.
You can edit/delete/add categories
The app will remember the sorting by category

@Jeenu I understand that this might not be a good solution for you, but most users were asking for a way to create multiple 'automatic playlists'.
This means having episodes from some podcasts into one playlist, then other into a different playlist.
Using the categories allows to do this.
Even though it works for most users I know that it doesn't solve the issue for other users.
Sorry about that -

I just installed the app. I don't see how this 'categories' feature is a substitute for conventional playlists.
Playlists ought to be a mechanism to group selected episodes. What I see with feature is that, I create categories, and assign *entire* podcast subscription to that.
What I've used playlist for is to pick specific episodes to listen to in sequence. These may come from different subscriptions, instead of *everything* from one or more subscriptions. For my use case, I'd say this 'category' feature is terribly useless.
Am I missing something? Is there a way to group only selected episodes and play them together, continuously?

@Andrew Copley
The app resume playback from the current playlist. If you open the audio playlist and press on an episode play button, then this will become the current playlist. Unless you open the custom playlist and press play, then app will not use it.
Please send me an email in case of an issue/question instead of posting here (Settings/Feedback)

It seems that since the update the custom playlist always starts playing instead of my regular playlist. Is there a way to prevent this or a way to "hide" the custom playlist if I do not want to use it?

@Andy D.
If you disable Settings/Playlist/Allow streaming, only downloaded episodes will then be displayed in those playlists -

The old Playlist function mostly works for me -- except that it separates Audio episodes and Video episodes. I was hoping that the new Custom playlist would allow me to combine those two playlists into one so that I could have a single, drag-and-drop-sorted playlist that I could consume without having to flip between Audio and Video.
When I enabled the Custom playlist (and put all of the podcasts into one Category), I see 1,746 episodes listed in that Custom playlist, the majority of which I've not yet downloaded, so, unfortunately, it doesn't allow me to do what I'd hoped.
Perhaps I'm overlooking a way to generate one Custom playlist which only displays the downloaded episodes I want to listen to? I am open to ideas about how to create such a list...
Thank you!

@Anonymous
I developed this new feature in a way that doesn't add any complexity to the app while solving the user case for 90% of the users.
It's not perfect, but it allows the creation of mood/themed/category based playlists which I was asked about on a daily basis.
A new beta is available that fixes some bugs and performance issue.
Most limitations you're referring to are in fact technical limitations of the app.
Fixing them would require building important parts of the app from scratch.
I will do this someday, but for now, I try to get the most popular requests implemented before thinking about this.
Adding a way to have multiple playlists in the app was one of them, then cross device syncing is the next major feature I need to implement.Please add a new feature request for multiple playlists and try to describe your user case in it so only users having a similar need will vote for this (having multiple playlists working like the main global playlist?)
Thanks a lot for your feedback

@Xavier
I know the app has only one single global playlist that can be controlled manually.:)
But if I understand you correctly, you don't want to change this at all, right?
That's a pity, considering that this is the very feature so many users ask for, and this is also what many of them mean when they say "multiple playlists".
Obviously, it's your decision, you're the app creator and its owner, you're the artist and the mastermind behind all this work :) and it's entirely up to you what feature you choose to introduce (or not). It's just that it's one of the very, very few popular features that are missing in your otherwise so feature-rich and amazing app, and one that could potentially be used for many different purposes by lots of users.
But back to the custom playlists that we have now, i.e. my feedback:
- it would be nice to switch off the automatic start of playback right after choosing the category. The user may want to change the sorting order of episodes before s/he starts the playback, and starting immediately is pretty distracting.
Plus, I don't know how many people are in this situation, but I use the "Playback in progress" list quite heavily to track down the episodes I've started but never completed, and while testing the new category playlists I ended up adding many episodes there, and had to reset the progress manually.
- the custom playlists can be sorted manually (by drag & drop) but the order is forgotten immediately when I switch to another custom list. I guess it has to work like that, if the lists are created on the fly, but it's quite a huge limitation. Same goes to removing episodes from a custom playlist.
Oh, and I hope I didn't sound too critical in the beginning of my comment! It's just that when I saw the 'completed' sign next to 'allow multiple playlists', I was over the moon for a moment, downloading the updated version of the app :).
For sure, I will find a good use for the new feature, even though it's quite different from what I would expect. I gotta play a bit with it, adding some new categories etc. (I don't use the default ones, provided by podcasts owners). Thank you for all your effort!

@Anonymous
The app has and will only have a single global playlist that can be controlled manually.
Other lists are created on the fly by the app based on the selected category or on displayed screen. Sorry this doesn't solve your issue -

"I am thankful that you're working on this! Unfortunately, this approach does not work for the way I would use multiple playlists."
Same here. I very much appreciate that you've been working on that but this is not quite the way I'd use multiple playlists.
I've got some podcasts with dozens of episodes I haven't listened to, and I don't want all of those episodes to be added to a list, just a few of them (and some more later on). I rarely listen to a few episodes of the same podcast one after another. I tried to remove some episodes manually from a custom playlist but those changes are not saved (i.e. when I re-open the same category as a custom playlist, the episodes are back on the list). The multiple playlists do not differ much from the auto-generated playlists for individual podcasts that were introduced some time ago: just this time we have episodes from an entire category.
It would be nice to just have the possibility to manually add episodes to a couple of manually-created, not category-based playlists.

Hello,
I just bought the no pub app., because I really like Podcast Addict. How can I get the new v 3.42 in order to use the multiple playlists I was waiting for ?
Thanks for this really great job, P.A. is the best one I think. -
@Brianna
You might be able to achieve this by pressing on the episode star button.
You can then access the favorite episodes from the navigation sidebar and then press on the play button. The app will then create a temporary playlist containing all the favorite episodes. Feel free to send me an email in case you have a question (Settings/Feedback)
Thanks -

I am thankful that you're working on this! Unfortunately, this approach does not work for the way I would use multiple playlists. What I often do is listen to my podcasts, and eventually I'll find an episode that I want to re-listen to when my husband is in the car with me, which I want to store in a separate playlist. So my playlists aren't separated only by which show belongs in which playlist, but what I need is to put specific episodes in different playlists (or even two different playlists at the same time).
Like I said, happy for the step forward, but this doesn't address my needs well.
(A few weeks ago I downloaded a podcasting app that allows multiple playlists, because I've intended to switch apps for this specific reason alone, though I've been slow to actually make the change. This is the one and only feature that is driving this decision - apart from this, I really enjoy your app! Which is part of what makes leaving hard.)

Looking forward to trying it. This could be my reason for returning to Podcast Addict. I've move away from it for the past couple of years specifically because of this issue.

I bought the app but if the multiple playlist option is not coming soon, or at least how much we need to wait, I'll drop the app. Not saying this to add pressure, just my feeling. I was very happy with Podcast Lounge on Windows Phone and was using the playlists all the time, depending on my mood like explained by others. With this feature lacking I am not sure I will let this frustration persist a long time.

Is this ever coming? You posted that it would be coming soon like 15 months ago.

I would add my voice to this. For nearly a year now I have been hoping for you to implement playlists. PA is a superb product and with this feature would become my one and only playback app.

I think it's one of the most awaited features of the app ever: based on the number of votes here and on the number of people who have been posting this very idea in separate threads.
Many people tend to listen to different stuff depending on where they are (home vs. work vs. commute etc.), in what mood, at which time of the day etc. Being able to have a number of separate playlists (created manually) would be like this magical remedy, a very powerful feature that would contribute a lot to the total user experience with this app.
I understand that this may be just different from the way the developer uses his app, or not that easy to implement, but this would really make a difference.
