add an option to normalize the audio volume
I'm doing some testing to check if I can implement this audio efect. However in order to test this I would need some sample files whith different audio levels between them or even within. Can you please send me an email with either link to some episodes (Settings/Feedback/Send email)?
Thanks

But this is not volume boost. This is a different thing.

This characteristic would be so great. To be able to hear a full podcast with the same decibels, overriding podcast's mic problems, different voices volumes, etc

The current volume boost causes distortion which is dangerous for speakers and ears. It really needs to be switched to a compressor instead of a gain boost.

There are times when I am listening to my playlist and it is not easy for me to change the volume (for example, I'm cooking and my hands are both covered in raw chicken). Some podcasts are much louder than others, so the next podcast on my playlist might be very quiet or very loud compared to the last one.

+1 for this
Also check out Poweramp recording gain functionality. Gain without clipping applied on a per track basis. Would be great to see this in PA. -

The audio is often over driven to the point of distortion. Also the equalization seems very high to the midrange

Yes by podcast I mean subscription. Every episode of Podcast A will use this settings, while it will remain disabled for Podcast B

Thanks! But to be sure: Is "per podcast" = "per subscription"? I have a subscription to Podcast A and Podcast B, and Podcast A is always quieter than Podcast B. If I'm listening to an episode of Podcast A and enable the volume boost, will the next episode of Podcast A be boosted too?
Sorry, but I'm a bit confused about if you and I mean the same when we're talking about "podcast" ;)

@Jan Ahnen
You can enable this globally from the app settings but you can override it from the player screen in which case the app will memorize the setting per podcast -

I've been running all my podcasts with the "Volume boost" enabled. It does increase the volume making it easier to hear above road noise. However, I would like to understand what it does, so I can tell whether it is always going to have the desired effect.

Will this boost the volume for all podcasts by the same value? I have some podcasts that are more quieter than other ones and when the current podcast is finished and it switches to the next I have to raise the volume manually. So enabling boosting per podcast would be great.

It just increases the volume in real time, so yes the sound quality won't be so great. There's no processing of the file during download

What is the meaning of "volume boost"? a simple volume increase that will result in clipping (I hope not, it would hurt the ears a lot) or a dynamic range compressor (a non-linear audio gain, see the "compressor" filter in Audacity)?
Ideally, PA should record the maximum peak volume after download (not every podcast has been normalised) to set a simple gain (skip this if listened on the fly without complete download) and also apply a "compressor" to increase perceived loudness and therefore improve speech recognition. -
The next version (currently in beta), adds a 'Volume boost' feature in the player screen menu.
This isn't what you were asking for but it might help. Please try the latet beta and let me know how it works for you.

Ideally, you should be able to raise the volume to more than the "max" for very quiet podcasts.

Just a checkbox to boost the volume would be nice (or a slider going over 100%). I listen mostly to France Culture Podcasts and the sound level is uneven between programs (some are fine and some other are really difficult to hear in the car).
fantastic program in any case... -

I used to use Downcast on an iPhone and it had an option like this and it worked great. It would be great if you could add this to Podcast Addict. It's a fine app otherwise but a pain when using Bluetooth.

Kyle: Podcast addict is ok. The problem is that the volume in your nexus 4 is not at the maximum when you plug it to your car stereo. The solution is to increase the volume in your Nexus 4 so you won't have to increase the volume in your sound system. Keep it at 20.
This is what i do everytime i plug in my smartphone to the car sound input. -
