I think most podcast app developers don't take the read flag seriously enough. I don't want to mark episodes which I didn't listen to as read, because knowing which episodes I had actually listened to is very important information, and they are diametrically opposite to episodes I ignored and never even cared about. Conflating the two is a terrible workaround.
When I encounter a topic I remember I had heard a podcast about, and want to listen to it again or share it with a friend, I use my already played filter to find it. The last thing I want is clutter that up with junk I wasn't ever interested in, let alone listened to.
This is the main reason I got an immediate refund on Pocket Casts, because it marks every episode before the moment of subscription as read by default. Swipe left would be a great way to allow distinguishing "already played" from "don't care".
