I came from Castbox and it has a fairly similar feature to this request that I miss.
The way it worked in Castbox, and the way I think I'd like it in Podcast Addict too, was that it was the number of unplayed episodes that were newer than a set date, such as 2 months ago.
That way when a new episode comes out you can pop into the podcast to check out the title and maybe come back to it in a few days or weeks without it losing the "new unplayed" status, allowing you to review several new episodes from multiple podcasts to choose which one to listen to now.
