Oh, to clarify: what I really want is the ability to quickly toggle back & forth between manual sort and my preferred automatic sort. The checkbox is merely a suggested way of achieving that, but a different UI for that would also be fine.

Definitely this would help. I got frustrated at the difficulty in re-ordering priorities, so I ended up creating a Dewey-decimal-ish scheme for the podcasts, e.g. high priority favorites >1000, news & dailies in the 900s, shows to keep up on for discussing with friends in the 800s, and so on down. :D Then there's sure to be enough space to re-order shows easily within their group. But that's ... awful UX.

Drag & drop would solve the problem permanently, easily, & completely intuitively.

I use the "alternate podcasts" option in the playlist, so I don't need equal priorities. But for those who want equal priorities, there are lots of possible solutions. The most flexible would be multi-select: select several adjacent podcasts in the priority list, hit the "=" button, and bam-presto they're a single group sharing one priority. Heck, then you can even drag&drop the groups if you need to reorder them!

Hey, I implemented a similar feature in the latest Beta of the app as a test.
Can you please join the Beta on the app Play Store page and then download the latest update
Then please go into Settings/Playlist and enable ‘Smart priority sorting’
Please let me know how this works for you so I can know if this makes sense to have this in the next version of the app

FYI this takes into account priority and episode release date

    Thanks

There's a common, simpler algorithm that's just: (Priority + DaysSinceDownloaded).

It's really nice because it's stable. A fully-downloaded playlist of episodes will stay sorted in the same order even if you ignore it for a day. And that makes perfect intuitive sense: if they all got one day older, then their priorities compared to each other should stay the same. Then if you download a new episode, it just gets inserted somewhere into that sorted list based on its (priority+age) also, with no reshuffling.

By contrast, the ((2^(priority-1))*releaseage) algorithm would cause the playlist to reshuffle in weird and counterintuitive ways.

Four digits. Some podcasts have been published for over a decade now.

    Or better yet, arbitrary digits.
