    EDIT: where it says

    "Now because the files are marked as played, I can select the custom playlist for this podcast"

    I meant, of course, is that I CAN'T select that custom playlist.

  2. Sort by mixed mode (podcasts with downloaded episodes at the top, then sort by publication date)
