Only keep X most recent episodes downloaded / Delete least recent, downloaded episode
The app should have the option to automatically delete the least recent episode currently downloaded to make room for new episodes as they become available when the user has defined a maximum number of episodes to keep downloaded.
Current behaviour when using automatic downloads of episodes in Archive mode, used in conjunction with the "Keep at most" setting in Automatic cleanup, results in new episodes to not be downloaded if the user defined limit of episodes to keep is already reached. If the user then manually downloads the latest episode a seemingly random downloaded episode from the podcast is deleted to stay within the limits dictated by the "Keep at most" setting. To me it seems like the intended behaviour here is to keep the most recent episodes, but if the user doesn't keep up with listening to the new episodes the app fails to keep the most recent ones downloaded as the least recent episodes are not automatically deleted. A similar option does of course exist, the "Delete older episodes" setting in Automatic cleanup, but seeing as different podcasts release episodes with differing regularity this option makes it difficult to set a global limit that keeps recent episodes downloaded consistently. In addition, if you were to set a podcast specific age limit that takes into consideration how often new episodes are usually published, and the publisher then, for whatever reason, decides to publish more episodes than usual this could cause the limit on how many episodes to keep to be reached, which again would result in new episodes not being downloaded automatically.
An similar option to delete the least recent, downloaded episode of a podcast, to make room for new releases, would allow users to consistently keep a user defined number of most recent episodes downloaded on their device.
Please disable the archive mode. Then the app will download new episodes as they are published up to X episodes. After that every time a new episode is published the app will delete the oldest downloaded one before downloading the new episode

I also would like this feature to be implemented. For my example I like to keep technology or sports podcasts, and want to listen to them in chronological order.
I want to keep podcasts up to say a month old, but no more, and want to keep only the oldest 3 of multiple podcasts.
As the podcast never downloads a new episode, the setting does not clean up the oldest ones.
The app would have to delete podcasts bases on download date, without having to be triggered by a new download.
Great app keep up the good work. -

The new proposal suggest to have always as many as possible youngest episodes downloaded up to the limit.
In case a new episode is published, podcast addict behaves like wanted, when archive mode is disabled.
The problem is, that there might be podcasts, where new episodes are less frequent published than listened to. Then older episodes should be downloaded up to the limit. -

I'd really like something like this. I have some breaking news podcasts I listen to, where only the most recent few episodes are worth having. Since they vary in regularity I'd really appreciate an "X episodes" option instead of "X days".

Archive mode is specifically for when you want to start at the beginning of the podcast and listen all the way through

Archive mode is specifically to keep older episodes until they are listen to if you don't want that behavior turn off archive mode but keep it on download oldest first and and activate delete older episodes
