Variable speed playback broken with some podcasts
A recent update broke variable speed playback on a few of my podcasts (cheapass gamer's cagcast being one). If I change the playback speed at all, even 1.1x, it sounds like they are talking in slow motion. Not all my podcasts have this issue, and the ones that are broken had worked fine before that update.

Nothing was broke on variable playback speed. It just doesn’t support M4A files very well and because of some hardware/drivers bugs, some devices aren’t compatible (Samsung S4 for exemple).
Did you install the app on a different device or update you Android/Rom version ?
Please don't use this section to report an issue. There's a dedicated form available for bug reporting (Settings/Feedback/Report a bug)
This page is dedicated to new feature request
Regarding the issue, the app relies on your device compatibility with the file. It uses a specific Android API to extract some information about the file, if it fails to do so, this feature won't work. Maybe other apps don't use the same API, but there's nothing I can do if the device doesn't fully support the file format.
Some podcast owner provide a mp3 feed as well as the m4a file. You shouldn't have this issue with the mp3 feed

I can't change the playback speed of m4a-files from the podcast reingemacht.com. On other podcast player it is working fine. e.g. Beyondpod :-(
I'm not aware of any issue related to playback listening, and I can assure you it works fine on Samsung devices.
Some file type may fail if the device hardware fails to retrieve some file information like encoding, or channel number, but those are pretty rare.
Please let me know which podcast you're having issues with.

Have you looked at how smart audiobook player has 4 options for decoder? That seems to allow variable speed playback even on Samsung devices.
Yes. As indicated on the play store this feature requires android 4.1+
If variable playback speeds are not listed under the player settings menu, does that mean they are not supported on that device?
This issue has been fixed in the latest Beta. It will soon be available in the Play Store
