Better restore option please
I had to switch phones and had trouble moving my profile over. I could make an opml file quite easily. Whether it was on the nexus or on dropbox. However to read the opml file on the new nexus was impossible with the tools provided. Here is what I had to do:
1) Notice where the opml files were being stored.
2) Store the old opml file on dropbox.
3) Hook the new phone into my laptop and drag the opml file from dropbox to where podcast addict expected to find the file in point 1.
We should not have to do this. We can export to dropbox easily. We should have the built in functionality to also import from dropbox.
The first 2 steps are not necessary because once the backup is done you just have to press the share button to export the file to Dropbox. You can also share through yourself through mail then open this email on your new device. But you can also open the Dropbox app on your new device and press on the opml backup to restore it. No need to copy files from a computer

@Anonymous thank you! Your method worked for me as well! Brilliant!

@Anonymous
You don't have to copy the file into a specific folder of the device.
You just need to download/copy it somewhere, then browse your device memory from the restore screen to select the backup to restore

For whatever reason, the backup file did not want to be pasted into the new phone's Podcast Addicts Backup folder, no matter what I tried, e it sending the file by email, NFC or other sharing functions. After hooking up both the new phone and the old phone to my Windows 10 laptop, I was able to paste the file on my PC Laptop. From there cut and paste did not work, but dragging it from the Desktop into the Backup Folder of the new phone did do the trick. It took me several hours to figure this out. You may want to add detailed instructions relative to migrating to a new Android phone

I was having an issue restoring until I did this. The backup file the app created had a file name that ended in xxxx.backup The file type is a BACKUP file by default so it does not need the suffix. I edited the file name by removing the .backup at the end. Then I pointed PA to restore from that file and bingo - its all back the way it was before I did my factory reset. Thank you Xavier Guillemane for making such a great app for us!

@Vee
Please contact me in case of an issue so I can help (Settings/Feedback)
The app allows you to select any backup file stored on your device. You can browse the whole device memory to find it.
It's just that the default folder displayed is the app storage.

Hi,
I am experiencing the same issue. I'm trying to restore a back up I made today but the restore function will only let me look for .backup files in /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.bambuna.podcastaddict/files/podcast/backup.
I have no idea how to move the .backup file to that directory on my phone. I am also using an Android phone and I have macbook so I can't move files in my phone by connecting it to my computer as an external drive.
How can I move my .backup file to the right directory on my phone? Or how can I restore from a .backup file that is not located in that directory?

@John
I'm sorry but I don't understand your comment.
Why do you want to copy a file in a specific folder?
If you want to backup/restore the app data, you need to go into Settings/Backup do a full backup, then use the share button to send the file via the cloud or email to then new device. There you can download it and restore it by going into settings/Backup & restore and pressing on restore.
I can assure you that the gmail app allows you to download any attached file.
Please send me an email in case you have question/issue (Settings/Feedback)

Oh and by the way, if I choose Share via email - and email it to myself, Google Inbox on my device will let me open the file with: Dropbox, Chrome, Firefox and Internet!
There's no way to save it to the device when you email it to yourself. You can only "view" it.

This IS a mess. Google just forced me to wipe my phone. Now I've reinstalled PodcastAddict and when I go to Restore - It tells me the location must be:
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.bambuna.podcastaddict/files/podcast/backup
However, when using any file manager, all I can see is /storage/emulated. After /emulated there is nothing! So I can't copy the file into the expected (and demanded) directory. So, I have no idea how to do this.
Also, I can't even figure out how to get Dropbox to download the file. All it lets me do is Share or Open With. If I choose to Open With PodcastAddict, then PodCastAddict opens - to the settings page. And nothing happens. It can't find the file and I can't put it where it expects to find it! INSANE!

Gs6edge to Gs7edge using dropbox. Used share with no problems. But had the same issue of app not being able to see file, no matter where I put it, and even though it ended in .backup. It did see the .opml file but using the import function did nothing. Then I did the "optimize" function in the app settings, and after that, the app saw the .backup file. Everything was just fine then. All podcasts and app settings restored.

You need to rename the backup file with '.backup' extension. When restoring data PA was unable to see the said backup file. However, once I renamed i.e. 'Podcast Addict backup.backup' PA was able to perform a full restore.

How do you retrieve a file from gmail or dropbox without first opening the gmail or dropbox app ?
When sharing something, android can open the list of apps that allows sharing so you can choose which app you want to share with. When you want to retrieve data from a another app there's no other way than opening this app first and retrieve the data manually.

There certainly is a disconnect here. I think you are totally blind when it comes to this issue. However you make a good product despite this and it is not a big issue. I was only trying to help you. Hopefully on the next issue we can come to an agreement. Or maybe this problem could be understood if we communicated via the phone. Like I said though it's not a big issue and merely wanted to help you make the product better.

I'm sorry but I will stop answering your comments. Please read my previous answers.
When you want to retrieve data from Dropbox on your device you HAVE TO open the dropbox app and download the file. Samething with a mail.
There's no alternative. So please stop posting about this non issue ;)

"The file structure is the one of your device. Why are you saying it's a mess ? "
I don't have to navigate the file structure when I do a backup. I simply pick Dropbox which you thankfully make available. On restore you do not have the Dropbox option. I'd like that option. You shielded us from the file structure on the backup. I wish you would shield us from the file structure on the restore.

I had the same problem; backups seem to work fine (they show up as a zip file when I look at them), but restores didn't seem to work.
Cutting a long story short, what fixed it for me was: make sure the name of the backup file ends in ".backup". This is the way PA saves it, but it gets lost when you "share" to Google Drive (and I suspect other paths too). Once I did this I could open the saved file from PA. I suspect there is a filter set on the open dialog to only show files that end in ".backup".
However I still couldn't just click on it in google drive: that path took me to OPML Import, instead of restore, even when the file ended in ".backup".

The file structure is the one of your device. Why are you saying it's a mess ?
If you want to select a file on your device you will alway have to browse the device memory like this...
There's a unique way to do this and it's not specific to Podcast Addict.
When ytou want to share something android will show you the list of apps having a sharing feature, but to retrieve a document you will ALWAYS have to open the correct app manually to download or open it. -

People can't navigate the file structures easily. It is a mess. Fortunately on the backup the Dropbox folder is an option and opened automatically if you specify Dropbox. On the restore there is no way to specify Dropbox and you are left trying to figure out where on the Android the Dropbox folders are located. Some symmetry here to make the restore look like the backup would be great. The symmetry being a button to immediately open the Dropbox folder so you don't have to be an expert on android file system layouts.
