I’m not sure to understand what you mean by the partially played episode remains in the un-played state and will return again when playing through the list.
If you mark an episode as played you won’t see it anymore if played episodes are hidden.
However this doesn’t remove the episode from the playlist.

There’s a single ‘played’ status, so the flag behave the same way when added manually or automatically by the app. However when an episode has been fully listened to the app can do other action based on your settings such as deleting the file and removing the episode from the playlist

Thanks for some additional clarification. Part of this is comes from the fact that the vast majority of my listening is via Android Auto. So, what I'm really looking for, is to abort a podcast before it finishes from the android auto user interface and have it removed from the play list. Totally understand that options available to you on Android Auto are probably limited.

So I fall back to just having the "mark played" option remove the podcast from the playlist.

Short of that, what would the workflow to accomplish what I'm looking for?

    Would it be:
    1. In android Auto, skip to next podcast
    2. After the fact, mark the episode as Played
    3. Delete the episode from my phone?

Just trying to understand what I can do with current capabilities.
