Category Playlist
It would be amazing if we could set up a playlist of categories. So, for example, if I had 4 categories of podcasts, news, sports, tech, and entertainment, it would play the first podcast episode from each category, then rotate back up to the top of the list. This way, you never get two of the same show, or even two of the same type of show, in a row, with zero playlist management.
Podcast Addict v3.42 has just been released.
This new version finally adds support to multiple playlists.
In order to use this new feature, you can go into the Playlists screen and select the new ‘Custom’ tab.
Then you can select the category of your choice and listen to it.
Those default categories are provided by the podcast owner in their RSS feeds, but you can press on the toolbar ‘Category’ button and add/delete/customize them.
That way you can create playlists like News, Commute, Workout, Audiobooks, SFW, …
Each playlist can have its own sorting mode.
Please let me know what you think about this new feature
Thanks
=========
The new beta allows you to play podcasts by category. The UI is still a work in progress but the feature works.
On the app main screen you can filter by the category of your choice and then press on the play button to start playing episodes from the selected podcasts
Feel free to shore your feedback on this.
Thanks

I'd vote for this request except it's closed -- and it seems it's closed incorrectly. The custom playlist feature only sets up playlists per category, which is the opposite of what this request asked for.
"it would play the first podcast episode from each category, then rotate back up to the top of the list. This way, you never get ... two of the same type of show, in a row"
For example, suppose I had 20 podcasts organized in 3 categories: Arts, Education, & Technology. We're asking for the auto-sort feature to play 1 episode of one of the podcasts in the Arts category, then 1 episode of one of the podcasts in the Education category, then 1 episode of one of the podcasts in the Technology category, then back to Arts, and so on, alternating categories.

You cannot disable that tab.
If you start playing from the audio playlist tab, then the app won't switch to the custom tab. The only way to switch to the custom tab is to either start playing an episode from the tab or from a podcast/episode list screen. In that case the app will build a temporary playback queue with the episodes displayed on the current screen and play that list.

Can I disable the 'custom playlists'? In the last week, when playing from standard 'Audio' playlist in my car, it will randomly start playing from a 'Custom' playlist.
I tried deleting from that playlist only to discover it deleted the episodes. New episodes are automatically added to various custom playlists. There seems to be no obvious way to disable the Custom playlists.

Xavier,
You're a rockstar. This feature, on top of everything else, makes this the absolute king of podcast players.
The custom playlist appears to be ignoring the "stream or not" setting, and streaming episodes I've not yet downloaded..I'd like to play only downloaded episodes in the custom playlist. I'll mail you with screenshots of my settings, maybe I'm just missing something.
Thanks again for this fantastic feature, it is a boon when researching a particular subject or topic.

Which kind of change are you trying to do to the playlist?
You cannot add episodes to a custom playlist. You can edit the category to add/remove podcasts and then the playlist will be updated with your changes.

This is one of the most appealing features of PA, but I can't really get it to work properly and would appreciate some instructions about the workflow. I try to make changes to the playlist in a particular category, but these do not save. Also, I can't find out how to add episodes to the custom playlist. I have some that are in the general Audio list, but they don't appear in the relevant category in the Custom tab. And sometimes the Custom tab drop-down doesn't work.

I don't see the "custom tab" option, where is it?

Glad to see this addition, though it still doesn't allow you to auto-rotate through different categories like what was being discussed. You guys are doing an amazing job further refining the app! I hope to see category rotation down the line.

I agree, separate playlists for different categories would be a great asset for those of us who follow podcasts dealing with 2 or more topics.

I love this idea. I was going to request something similar. However, since I saw this could I suggest a randomization feature for which podcast is played in a given category? If possible a randomizer in the playlist sorting as well(<though that may be redundant. Hm.)? Love the app and listen to it when I work. It is a delight! Thank you!!

@Nathan
Thanks for the description
IMHO this really looks like something too specific.
I never had any similar requests before...
We'll see if this become a popular feature. Thanks

No, the idea is to, instead of a set playlist of episodes, have a smart playlist that rotates through categories. So, if you have eight podcasts in four categories, named News1, News2, Sports1, Sports2, Movies1, Movies2, Tech1, Tech2, and download episodes from each, so that the each category has these episodes in this order:
News Category list:
News1 Episode 1
News2 Episode 1
News1 Episode 2
News2 Episode 2Sports Category list:
Sports1 Episode 1
Sports2 Episode 1
Sports1 Episode 2
Sports2 Episode 2Movies Category list:
Movies1 Episode 1
Movies2 Episode 1
Movies1 Episode 2
Movies2 Episode 2Tech Category list:
Tech1 Episode 1
Tech2 Episode 1
Tech1 Episode 2
Tech2 Episode 2The smart playlist would play the episodes by playing the first episode in each category. So you would get an auto playlist that would play in this order:
News1 Episode 1
Sports1 Episode 1
Movies1 Episode 1
Tech1 Episode 1
News2 Episode 1
Sports2 Episode 1
Movies2 Episode 1
Tech2 Episode 1
.... and so onMakes sense?

@Nathan
I'm not sure to understand the difference.
Are you asking for a way to filter the current playlist by category?
The multiple playlist feature will allow you to create playlists displaying some podcasts/categories -
Nathan Weinberg commented
Xavier, the multiple playlist feature appears to refer to creating multiple separate playlists, while I'm talking about a single smart playlist that cycles through categories, a completely different thing. I'd appreciate if you could reopen this, unless I'm missing a feature request somewhere that does match what I'm talking about.
