I actually like Derek's idea. Add a toggle to display the ads (on a purely voluntary basis) even if one has paid to remove them. I'm not in a position to support you via patreon/paypal, but I'd let the ads play if it provide you more revenue to support development.

I like this idea as long as the boost can be controlled on a per podcast basis along with the other customizations availble at the individual podcast level

I'm doing some testing to check if I can implement this audio efect. However in order to test this I would need some sample files whith different audio levels between them or even within. Can you please send me an email with either link to some episodes (Settings/Feedback/Send email)?
Thanks

EDIT: a 1st beta will be available by the end of the day.
FYI the Custom playlists will soon be improved.
Filters will be available so the selected category can only show episodes based on their download status, played status, stared status, publication date, …
I get it that some of you want multiple playlists were episodes can be manually added, but there’s no plan to implement this for now.
However, according to the feedback I got by email, it looks like those filters will solve limitations of the current solution for most users.
Feel free to send me some feedback by email if you have ideas for other filters that can be implemented (Settings/Feedback/Email)

I would also like this feature... I have 3 different podcasts that I only listen to when they put out something I'm particularly interested in. When I find one, I manually download that episode and listen to it.
I would like older episodes that haven't been downloaded and played to be marked played at a user specified time.
I have seen the Automatic Clean-up/Keep at most settings that Dan S suggested but they don't seem to do anything for "unplayed" and never downloaded episodes. It's not a huge deal to manually clear things up with an occasional "mark all played" command, but I would be nice for it to be automagic.
